Suspicious package found at Morgan Square Mall

The Morgan Square Mall had to be evacuated this morning after the Enterprise Police Department was notified of a suspicious package left inside the mall.  Enterprise Police notified the Dothan Police Department Bomb Squad for assistance with the situation.

The Dothan PD Bomb Squad X-rayed the package and determined that it did not contain an explosive device or anything dangerous.  The mall was later reopened for business.

Landing gear fails to deploy on student-flown plane

DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - Authorities at the Dothan Regional Airport had to scramble shortly before noon to clear a landing space for a plane in distress.

A student from Fort Rucker was training on a fixed-wing plane with another student and an instructor on board when the landing gear in the nose of the plane failed to deploy.

The plane was diverted to the Dothan Regional Airport where it made an emergency landing on its belly.

No injuries were reported.

DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - Two Dothan men, including a Dothan Fire Fighter, have been arrested for making and possessing methamphetamine in a Dothan home.

According to the Dothan Police Department, investigators received information that meth was being kept and sold from a residence in the 300 block of Rebecca Avenue. One person of interest in the case was a Dothan Fire Fighter.

Narcotics officers conducted a search warrant on the home and found items consistent with manufacturing of methamphetamine including precursor chemicals as well as the finished product.

Two men, 42-year-old Clarence Griffith, and 39-year-old Dothan Fire Fighter, Elmo Boyd, were arrested and charged with Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance and First Degree Manufacturing and Possession of Precursor Chemicals.

On January 24, 2012 the Dothan Police Department responded to a robbery of a person in the 300 block of East Lafayette Street. Upon arrival, the victim told police he was walking to his mailbox when a vehicle stopped on the roadway in front of his home. He said the driver approached and assaulted him knocking him to the ground. While on the ground, the suspect removed cash from the victims’ pocket then returned to his vehicle. Investigators have been working with the victim to identify the suspect who has now been arrested and charged with robbery.

  • Vincent Jamar McMiller, black male, 22 years of age, of South Park Avenue was arrested and charged with Third Degree Robbery with a $15,000 bond.

Man arrested after blood test proves he was impaired behind the wheel

On January 18, 2012 the Dothan Police Department responded to a vehicle collision with injuries on Bethlehem Road. Traffic Investigators say the collision occurred as a result of an impaired driver pulling into the path of an oncoming vehicle. The victim was treated for multiple injuries at a local hospital. The suspect was also taken to a local hospital for treatment where investigators obtained a subpoena for medical records of his blood alcohol level. Traffic Investigators say they received the test results on January 25, 2012 which confirmed the suspect was impaired by alcohol at the time of the collision. Upon receipt of this information, investigators signed and executed a warrant taking the suspect into custody for felony assault.

  • Carl Edmondson, white male, 47 years of age, of Ashford, Alabama was arrested and charged with First Degree Assault with a $30,000 bond.

Local high school students to compete in EnviroBowl at Troy University Dothan

Troy University will host the 2012 EnviroBowl competition for area high school students on Friday, January 27th, at the Dothan Campus.

Local students will put their knowledge of the environment to the test during the event, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the Harrison Room in Malone Hall.

Sponsored by Legacy, Partners in Environmental Education, EnviroBowl is a double-elimination, question and answer competition played between high school teams consisting of four students each.

About 50 students from eight local schools will be competing.

Troy University Dothan to offer grant writing course

Troy University Dothan to offer grant writing course

Troy University's Continuing Education Center will offer a course on grant writing at the Dothan Campus starting Wednesday, February 8th.

Participants will learn more about the process of writing successful grants.  Offered in three weekly sessions, the course covers grant development, locating funding sources, writing tips, commonly made mistakes, budgeting and more.
