'Color in Freedom' exhibit going on now at the Wiregrass Museum of Art

The Wiregrass Museum of Art is currently hosting 'Color in Freedom: Journey Along the Underground Railroad'.  This 50-piece exhibit "was created to capture the struggle for freedom and expression within the framework of this particular period in history".

The exhibition will be on display until December 27th.

Harp Christmas Concert to benefit the food bank set for Saturday

The Wiregrass Food Bank and the Tri-State Community Orchestra present A Harp Recital by Brittany Burns.

The recital is set for Saturday, December 22nd at 7 p.m. at the Dothan Cultural Arts Auditorium. 

Come for the beautiful harp music and stay for the Meet the Artist reception of light snacks and beverages to be held after the recital.

Troy University Art & Design students exhibit senior theses

Twelve Troy University art and design students are showcasing their work in Malone Gallery during the Fall Senior Thesis Exhibition that runs through Dec. 14.

The senior projects are required for graduation and each reflects the students' personal interpretations of the world around them. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. runs through Dec. 14.

A reception honoring the seniors is slated for 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Dec. 13 in Malone Gallery.

Seniors exhibiting are:

  • Hillary Andrews, a design, technology and innovation major from Montgomery, whose mixed media project focuses on branding and marketing for Head on the Door, a local Montgomery lounge.

Troy University Community Band to present free Christmas Concert tonight

The Troy University Community Band of Dothan will ring in the holiday season with a performance of classic Christmas songs during a free concert on Monday, Dec. 10, at the Dothan Campus.

The performance will start at 6 p.m. in Sony Hall inside the Library/Technology Building. The concert will include a variety of traditional and modern Christmas favorites.

The Troy University Community Band, under the direction of Jim Choate, is made up of local musicians of all ages and backgrounds including TROY alumni.

Wiregrass Blues Fest is tomorrow!

The second annual Wiregrass Blues Fest, December 8, 2012, at Cultural Arts Center in Dothan, will honor Big Mama Thornton, who had her roots in Ariton, Alabama. The evening will start at 7pm with a free educational presentation and discussion of the life, career and impact of Big Mama Thornton. Music (for which tickets are required) will begin at 8pm.

Headlining the festival will be Mac Arnold and Plate Full O' Blues. Mac has had a long career in the blues, including touring with Muddy Waters and sharing the stage with many blues greats, including Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Jimmy Reed, Junior Wells, Big Joe Williams, and Big Mama Thornton, to name a few. Expect to hear some great blues and some stories about Big Mama from Mac.

Other performers will include Debbie Bond, SharBaby, Rachel Edwards and Little Jimmy Reed.

Troy University, Alabama Blues Project present Wiregrass Blues Fest 2012

Troy University and the Alabama Blues Project will present the second annual Wiregrass Blues Fest on Saturday, Dec. 8th, at the Dothan Cultural Arts Center, to pay tribute to the famous Wiregrass blues legend, the late Big Mama Thornton.

Co-sponsored by Mercedes-Benz of Dothan, the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the Alabama Humanities Foundation, and the Hilton Garden Inn of Dothan, the Wiregrass Blues Fest will feature performances by a lineup of top performers including Mac Arnold and a Plate Full O’ Blues; Alabama blues women Debbie Bond, Shar Baby and Rachel Edwards; and Lil’ Jimmy Reed.
 
Gil Anthony, host of the Blues Power radio show, will emcee.

A free educational presentation on Big Mama Thornton’s life will begin at 7 p.m.
