"100 Dishes to Eat in Alabama Before You Die" brochure now avalable

The Alabama Tourism Department today released a new version of its food brochure as part of The Year of Alabama Food campaign. The brochure, 100 Dishes to eat in Alabama Before You Die, lists more than 30 new dishes.

Bessemer’s Bright Star Broiled Star Seafood Platter appears on the front cover of the printed brochure while the back cover shows plates of food from tourism’s Top 25 dishes. The publication is red with white lettering and white plates of food that represent Alabama’s culinary offerings.

The brochure highlights dishes at award-winning restaurants, historic diners, famous BBQ joints, farm-to-table, fresh Gulf seafood and home cooking.

DOTHAN, AL- The most popular show to ever portray the world of competition barbecue, BBQ Pitmasters, is coming to the 7th annual Tri-State BBQ Festival to film an upcoming episode. Season three of BBQ Pitmasters is scheduled to begin airing Memorial Day weekend, so filming during the April 13-14 event in Dothan was perfect timing.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

The Tri-State BBQ Festival is held at the Houston County Farm Center, and features some of the biggest names in professional competition barbecue, vying for over $10,000 in prize money.

Troy Dothan to offer "Instant Piano" course

Troy University will offer a one-night piano class on Monday, Feb. 20, designed to get novice musicians playing instantly.

The class will be held from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Dothan Campus Continuing Education Center.

Perfect for anyone who has always wanted to play the piano but felt they did not have the time to learn, “Instant Piano for Hopelessly Busy People” will introduce participants to the basic techniques needed to make piano playing a part of their lives.

Instructor David Haynes focuses on chord techniques, and will teach participants the skills needed to play any song in any style or key.

Registration is $55 plus a $25 materials fee that covers a book and practice CD. Space is limited and preregistration is required.

Troy University will host a screening of the documentary “My Anniston” followed by discussion with director Stan Arthur and the film’s subject, civil rights movement veteran Edward Wood.

The screening will be held at the Troy Campus on Monday, February 13th at 6:00 p.m. inside the Civic Room, located on the second floor of the Trojan Dining hall.

Discussion sessions with Arthur and Wood will follow each screening. Admission is free and open to the public.

“My Anniston” recounts the life story of 84-year-old Woods, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the civil rights movement, and a witness to the 1961 burning of a Freedom Riders bus in Anniston, Ala.

Chinese orchestra to perform for local middle school students at Troy University

More than 150 local middle school band students will learn more about classical Chinese music and culture when Troy University hosts a performance by the Nanjing University Traditional Instruments Orchestra on Friday, February 3rd, at the Dothan Campus.

Band students in 6th-8th grade at Beverlye Magnet School will attend the 10 a.m. performance inside the Sony Hall auditorium in the Library/Technology Building.

Founded in 1996, the Nanjing University Traditional Instruments Orchestra is a student art group that gives traditional performances in the form of instrumental ensemble, unison, small ensemble and solo, using bowed and plucked strings, wind and percussion instruments.
