Dothan police arrest two suspects on robbery charges | Crime
Title (Max 100 Characters)
On May 10, 2012 the Dothan Police Department responded to an armed robbery at Shell Station, 5825 West Main Street at 12:16 a.m. Upon arrival police learned the suspect entered the business armed with a handgun and demanded money from the cashier. The suspect became impatient with the cashier who was having problems getting the cash into the provided bag so he took the cash drawer and fled. The cashier told police the suspect was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and floral shorts.
Night shift patrolmen began a diligent search which lead to clues that may have been easily overlooked had the officers not been so vigilant. Police identified a possible escape route when they located a gray hooded sweatshirt in the 4200 block of Flowers Chapel then continued east where they found the flowered shorts and then a cash drawer even further east. As the escape route became clear, night shift patrolmen used this intelligence to saturate the area the suspect may be in, a move that paid off. Patrolmen stopped a suspicious vehicle at the Hop-In, just east of the evidence trail and detained the driver and passenger. A search of the vehicle revealed additional items described by the cashier including the handgun used during the offense.
The passenger, Travis McKnight, was identified as the robber and was placed under arrest. Investigators questioned and released the driver who denied any involvement. As the investigation continued throughout the day, police developed evidence that confirmed earlier suspicions regarding the driver, Janay Thomas, as an accomplice in this crime. Police signed a warrant against Thomas and took her into custody last night. Investigators say this case will now be closed but are working with authorities in a neighboring county and say further charges may be pending as one or both suspects may be linked with additional robberies.
Travis McKnight, black male, 31 years of age, of Ozark, Alabama was arrested and charged with First Degree Robbery with a $250,000 bond.
Janay Thomas, black female, 24 years of age, of Langley Drive was arrested and charged with First Degree Robbery with a $250,000 bond.
