Dothan teacher charged for alleged sex with student | Crime
DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - New details are surfacing reguarding a Dothan area high school teacher who was arrested and charged for allegedly having sex with a student.
Investigators say Calvin Bell-Tharpe, 30, is charged with engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student under the age of 19 years, in this case Bell-Tharpe is accused of molesting a 16-year-old boy. The charge is a felony.
The Northview High School teacher had a bond hearing Monday, but the judge has yet to make a ruling on whether or not he'll lower Bell-Tharpe's bond or keep it at $175,000.
The bond, which is conditional bond, would prohibit the suspect from any interaction with children under the age of seventeen.
It was not immediately known if the suspect had an attorney.
Dothan City School Board Chairman Harry Parrish said there is no place in the Dothan school system for people who abuse children, but he's not going to to jump to conclusions in the Bell-Tharpe case.
Bell-Tharpe has been an educator at Northview for five years.
