Dothan Salvation Army celebrates 100 years of service

The Salvation Army of Dothan is celebrating 100 years of serving the Wiregrass area during their annual Civic Appreciation Luncheon this Thursday, May 17th at 11:30 a.m. at the Wiregrass Rehab Lion's Hall, 795 Ross Clark Circle.

We count it a privilege to serve this wonderful community.  The Dothan Salvation Army first began in this community in 1912 and we are so blessed to still be helping meet the needs of people one hundred years later.

We want to thank our volunteers for the help given to us during the past years.  The job of serving others' needs cannot be done without the help of generous people and the great media we have in Dothan.

We are a United Way Agency.

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is set for tomorrow

The Stamp Out Hunger food drive is set for tomorrow

Tomorrow, Saturday, May 12, the United States Postal Service will team up with its letter carriers to conduct the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive across the nation to collect food donations in order to provide assistance to the millions of Americans who are struggling with hunger each and every day.

The nation’s 210,000 letter carriers will collect food donations left at the mailboxes of generous Americans in more than 10,000 communities and deliver them to food banks and other hunger relief organizations.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, the Stamp Out Hunger food drive is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, having collected more than one billion pounds of food since its inception in 1993. In 2011, generous Americans donated 70.2 million pounds of food, which marked the eighth consecutive year that at least 70 million pounds were collected.

Helping Stamp Out Hunger is as easy as checking your mailbox.

"Inspried by Nature" cermamics exhibit currently on display at the Wiregrass Museum of Art

The Wiregrass Museum of Art is exhibiting Inspired by Nature: Ceramics by Lynette Hesser and Steve Loucks through June 23rd.

Lynette Hesser and Steve Loucks are one of the South's most celebrated husband and wife ceramicist teams.  Loucks sculpts and forms the work, while Hesser carves and embellishes the form with detailed shapes and floral designs.

Lynnette Hesser, a resident of Alabama since 1987, was awarded the Alabama State Council on the Arts Fellowship in Crafts for 2011. Hesser designs are derived from geometric patterns and floral images. Loucks, who received his MFA in 1985 from the New York College of Ceramics at Alfred University, plays upon traditional pottery forms which transcend function.

Inspired by Nature is organized by the Wiregrass Museum of Art. The exhibition will be held in the museum's Dove East Gallery.
