The Red Cross is hosting a blood drive in Dothan today

The American Red Cross Blood Services, Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Region, which supplies blood to approximately 100 hospitals, needs 600 blood donors each day to meet the needs of patients in the region.  Please call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit www.redcrossblood.org to make an appointment to donate blood or platelets.

A blood drive is being held in Dothan today, April 4th at Wiregrass Commons Community Room from 12:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. The Community Room is at the mall entrance between Burlington and Dillard's and is across from Le Nails. Inside it’s located between Journeys and Foot Locker Shoes.

To give blood, you must weigh at least 110 pounds; you must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), and you must be in general good health.

Dothan City Commission to hold special called meeting Friday morning

The Dothan City Commission has scheduled a special called meeting for Friday, April 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. to discuss economic development. The meeting will be held in the City Commission Chambers on the second floor of the Dothan Civic Center.

Following the meeting, a press conference will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Dothan Opera House for an economic development announcement from Governor Robert Bentley, The Alabama Department of Commerce, City of Dothan, Houston County Commission, Dale County Commission, Dothan-Houston County Airport Authority, Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce and Dothan by Design, Ozark-Dale County Economic Development Corporation, and the Wiregrass Legislative Delegation.

Hardee’s Ride for Hope, Saturday, May 18, 2013

Saturday, May 18, Wiregrass Hope Group will host the 4th Annual Hardee’s Ride for Hope.  Sponsored by Hardee’s, the ride proceeds will go toward the services provided through Wiregrass Hope Group.

Registration will be from 9 to 10 at all 3 start/registration locations:

Hardee’s by Home Depot in Dothan;

Hardee’s in Abbeville, or

Hardee’s in Enterprise. 

The registration fee of $20 gives each rider a t-shirt, rider card and Hardee’s combo coupons for breakfast and lunch.  Free drink refills will be provided at each restaurant.

During the ride, bikers visit the 8 area Hardee’s (3 in Dothan, one in Headland, Abbeville, Ozark, Enterprise and Hartford.) to have their ride card stamped.  Cards must be completed and turned in by 3 pm for a chance to win the prizes.

NASP Alabama State Championship to be held in Montgomery tomorrow

NASP Alabama State Championship to be held in Montgomery tomorrow

The largest youth archery competition in Alabama, the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Alabama State Championship, will be held Thursday, April 4, 2013, at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl located at 220 Hall St., Montgomery, Ala., 36104.  Individual groups will begin shooting at 8:30, 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. The awards ceremony is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. The media and public are invited.

This is the first time the NASP Alabama State Championship will be held in Montgomery.

Only 9 days 'til Toadlick Music Festival!

Toadlick Music Festival’s second annual 3-day event is less than a week and a half away. The National PeanutFestival Fairgrounds in Dothan, Alabama, are going to come to life April 11-13, with an incredible line-up of more than 20 of today’s hottest country music and southern rock stars. This year’s event kicks off Thursday, April 11, at 2:15 p.m. with a battle-of-the-bands between some of the best local and regionaltalent in the Southeast. The 1st place winner in that competition will open the Festival on Friday, and the 2nd place winner will open on Saturday.

 

The artist line-up is as follows:

Thursday:             Brandon Self & The Outlaw Revival – 2:15 p.m.

                                RTFO – 3 p.m.

Law Enforcement officials to kick off Special Olympic Events with 5k Torch Run

Tomorrow law enforcement will be kicking off the Special Olympics (held at Dothan High) with the 5k Torch Run. Runners will be meeting at “Miracle Field” (Westgate Park) at 7:45 and beginning the run at 8:45. If you would like to get sound-bites and/or video come out at 8 am. Also, attached to the email will be a map showing the runners route for anyone wanting to get video footage. It will go from Miracle field to Choctaw Street. Choctaw Street to Ross Clark Circle. Ross Clark Circle to W. Main Street. W. Main Street. to S. Oates Street. And S. Oates Street to Dothan High School.

The Helen Keller Art Show is now on exhibit at the Wiregrass Museum of Art through May 17th

For over a decade, the Wiregrass Museum of Art has hosted The Helen Keller Art Show of Alabama.  Each year, artwork created by Alabama children with visual impairments, blindness and deafness is shown from Tennessee to Mobile. The show is juried, state-wide. Select pieces are also shown internationally.
