Family of murder vicitm to hold balloon release on Sunday

The family of Grace Bridges Dedert will be having a memorial balloon release Sunday March 17, 2013 at 2 p.m. at memory Hill Cemetery.

Sunday will mark the three year anniversary of the day Mrs. Dedert was murdered. 

The family hopes that media coverage will produce new leads in the case.

Area Students Compete in Tri-State Math and Computer Science Olympiad

Dothan, Ala. – Wallace Community College hosted the 31st Annual Tri-State Math and Computer Science Olympiad at the Wallace Campus in Dothan on Friday, March 1. Approximately 865 area students and 60 high school instructors from Alabama, Georgia, and Florida attended. Wallace Community College hosts the annual event to create interest in math and computer science and to recognize student accomplishments in these competitive fields. 

The event, themed “Mathematics and Computer Science: Helping Society Prepare for the Future,” recognized the role that mathematics and computer science play in predictions and astronomy. Both mathematics and computer science are heavily involved in calculating predictions and monitoring the sun’s cycles. NASA’s prediction of solar flares and the impact on our planet was the basis for this year’s Olympiad theme.

The Red Cross is hosting a blood drive in Dothan today

The American Red Cross Blood Services, Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Region, which supplies blood to approximately 100 hospitals, needs 600 blood donors each day to meet the needs of patients in the region.  Please call 1-800-RED-CROSS or visit www.redcrossblood.org to make an appointment to donate blood or platelets.

A blood drive is being held in Dothan today, March 7, 2013 at Wiregrass Commons Community Room from 12:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. The Community Room is at the mall entrance between Burlington and Dillard's and is across from Le Nails. Inside it’s located between Journeys and Foot Locker Shoes.

To give blood, you must weigh at least 110 pounds; you must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), and you must be in general good health.

Take steps to be weather ready during National Severe Weather Preparedness Week

The Alabama Emergency Management Agency (AEMA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are teaming up to promote National Severe Weather Preparedness Week March 3-9. Sponsored by FEMA and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Severe Weather Preparedness Week encourages individuals, families, businesses and communities to know about severe weather risks, take action to prepare for them, and Be a Force of Nature by encouraging others to get prepared.

Each year, many people are killed or seriously injured by tornadoes and other types of severe weather, despite advance warning. In 2012, there were more than 450 weather-related fatalities and nearly 2,600 injuries nationwide. Severe weather knows no boundaries and affects every individual in every region.

ASU's Teachers' Fair is set for Friday

ASU's Teachers' Fair is set for Friday

ASU will host over 60 different organizations at their Teacher's Fair on Friday, March 8th. 

This fair is open to the public. All who attend need to be dressed in business attire, have a current resume to give to each prospective employer and have a valid Teacher's-certificate. The fair will offer information and first-level screenings for jobs, with actual call-back interviews scheduled for the same day.

The Teachers' Fair is from 9 a.m. until noon, with follow-up interviews, by appointment, only from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.

'Darkness Into Life' exhibit opening at Troy's Dothan campus

An exhibit collecting the stories of Holocaust survivors now living in Alabama opened this week at the Dothan Campus as part of Troy University’s ongoing Year of Holocaust Remembrance.

“Darkness Into Life: Alabama Holocaust Survivors Through Photography and Art,” an exhibit on loan from the Birmingham Holocaust Education Center, will be on display inside the exhibit hall on the first floor of the Library/Technology Building through April 26.

Featuring the stories of 20 Holocaust survivors, the exhibit consists of photos, paintings and narratives by the survivors that teach the history of the Holocaust and offer a rich understanding of its impact on these individuals and their families.

“Darkness Into Life” is part of a Year of Holocaust Remembrance at TROY, which has included a number of special events, exhibits and lectures designed to explore the history and lasting effects of the Holocaust.

Alabama Wildlife Federation offering a workshop for conservation educators

The Alabama Wildlife Federation is offering a hands-on outdoor classroom activities workshop.  The workshop will be held in Dothan on Wednesday, March 6th from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

This FREE workshop is designed to provide educators with hands-on, inquiry-based activities that are correlated to the Alabama Course of Study objectives and that can be used in conjunction with an outdoor classroom and outdoor learning stations. 

During this workshop we will discuss the following:

  • Understanding the Hands-on, Minds-on Teaching Philosophy
  • Incorporating AWF's Outdoor Field Journal Activities and Themed Outdoor Classroom Activities into daily lesson plans
  • How to utilize AWF's Conservation Education Activity Search Engine
  • Where to find FREE conservation education activities
  • How to integrate technology in your outdoor classroom
