Fall 2011 Session Begins September 27, 2011

 

The Citizens Police Academy is intended to provide citizens with a view of the city through the eyes of a Police Officer.  The citizen will be exposed to the challenges and pressures faced by a Police Officer during a normal duty day. 

 

Program Objectives

 

     The terminal objective of the Citizens Police Academy is to assist the citizen in understanding the role of law enforcement in the community, the training that officers must complete and stresses that crime and public safety place on the City of Dothan.

Troy to offer free lecture Saturay in conjunction with "A Fine Romance" exhibit

A noted author and lecturer on Jewish culture and popular music will deliver a lecture on Saturday, Aug. 20, in Dothan in conjunction with the exhibit “A Fine Romance” currently on display at Troy University.

Dr. Kenneth Kanter, director of the Rabbinical School for the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in Cincinnati, OH, will discuss his book “The Jews of Tin Pan Alley” starting at 7 p.m. at the Temple Emanu-El located at 188 North Park Ave.

Wiregrass Natives, Buddy Buie and Terry Collins along with The ALS Association of Alabama will host the 2nd  Annual Downtown Music Fest on Saturday, August 20 at 7:00 p.m. The Dothan Civic Center will play host to this year’s event.

Troy to host free lecture in conjunction with 'A Fine Romance' exhibit

Troy University will host a lecture on the work of German-Jewish composer Kurt Weill on Thursday, July 28, in conjunction with the exhibit “A Fine Romance: Jewish Songwriters, American Songs" currently on display at the Dothan Campus.

The lecture will start at 7 p.m. inside the Sony Hall auditorium located in the Library/Technology Building. Admission is free and open to the public.

“From Berlin to Broadway: A Musical Voyage with Kurt Weill,” presented by Auburn University professor Dr. Thomas Nadar, will discuss the life and career of Weill and his influence on the music composers of Hollywood’s Golden Era.

Be Police Chief for a Day!

Enter the Dothan Police Department’s essay contest in conjunction with National Night Out!  The subject for this year’s essay will be “How Can You Help the Dothan Police Department Prevent Crime in our Community?”

Essays should be up to, but not exceeding, 300 words and is open to 13 – 16 year old students.  Deadline to submit an entry is July 25th, 2011.

Entries can be handwritten or typed and mailed or dropped off at the Dothan Police Department, 210 N. Saint Andrews St., Dothan, AL, 36303, between 8:00am – 5:00pm, M – F, or submitted by email to bbarnes@dothan.org .   Be sure to include your name and a contact number should you be chosen as the winner.
