National evangelist brings youth outreach worship service to central Alabama

Montgomery, AL – Dr. William Larkin and the Christian Methodist Episcopal Churches of the River Region invite children, youth, youth performers, and all area ministries to be a part of the Reach, Anoint, & emPower Youth Revival.

With invited local youth and performers and a nationally recognized evangelist and hip hop performer, the event is targeted at expressing the many faces and forms of worship and freeing the energy of youth culture in the church. The program will span several days and services will be held all over the area, reaching out to children and teens with an exciting, youth-centered worship led by Rev. Dwayne GoLightly, aka Rev. Rap. The event will finish with a Saturday afternoon gospel rap concert featuring Rev. Rap.

New Year's resolutions for your soul

Many of us make New Year's resolutions to better ourselves in a variety of different ways. Each year we begin determined, but within a few months are thrust back to life as it was at the end of the year before.

I believe that for us to truly make that change we long for, it must begin on a spiritual level. I thought I would share some of my beliefs in ways of making a difference in every aspect of our lives. It has worked for me, but honestly it has not been easy. At times it is a daily battle, but though each storm I have come back stronger and wiser. I feel like that is all you can ask for in life. I also feel that we are in the midst of a spiritual awakening and a change of consciousness.

So to truly begin to make a change with our lives, no matter how small or how large your challenge, it begins with our spiritual body and then slowly starts to change every aspect of our life.

SOUND OFF: How old is too old to trick-or-treat?

Growing up as a child getting ready to go trick-or-treating I remember my father jokingly asking me year after year, "Don't you think you're a little old for that?"

Every year the answer was always "Of course not!" That answer remained the same until my freshman year of high school when a school dance sounded like a better idea. My father's constant jesting does create an interesting question, how old is too old to trick-or-treat?

Cities like Belleville, Ill. have come up with an answer to that question in the form of a city ordinance: only children aged 12 and younger are permitted, under this ordinance, to trick-or-treat. Anyone older than that caught trick-or-treating faces a $100 fine.

Ordinances like this one haven't made their way to Alabama...yet. So we're giving you the chance to answer, should there be an age limit to trick-or-treating? Is this something a city should have a say in?

Alabama National Fair opens tomorrow!

“Thrills, Squeals, and Ferris Wheels…It’s Fair-tastic” is the theme for the 57th Alabama National Fair presented October 8 – 17, 2010. New outdoor entertainment will include the Great American Frontier Show, Welde’s Big Bear Show, and Robinson’s Racing Pigs and Paddling Porkers. Also the Puppetone Rockers, Joseph Bauer’s Circus Maximus, and Circle C Petting Zoo will be back again this year. There are many competitive divisions for youth and adults to participate in such as livestock, baking, needlework, quilting, photography, art, and many other competitions. The Fair will open with our third annual Salute to America’s Veterans on Friday night.
