Lane closures planned for East Main Street

 

Beginning Tuesday evening, May 21, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. thru Wednesday morning, May 22, 2013, at 7:00 a.m. the two (2) west bound lanes of East Main Street will be closed between Museum Avenue and N. Oates Street.  The two (2) east bound lanes will be open with traffic being rerouted to single lane traffic in these two lanes.  There will be equipment and contractor personnel in the streets and ROW from approximately 7:00 PM until 7:00 AM.  Motorists are asked to use extreme caution in the area during this time.

Suspicious package found at Dothan Civic Center deemed non-threatening

DOTHAN, AL (WSFA)- A suspicious package was discovered at the Dothan Civic Center Friday morning prompting calls to police.

Officer arrived at 9:30 a.m. to investigate what appeared to be a backpack left near a wall on the side of the Civic Center.

After evacuating the building, The Dothan Police Departments Bomb Team took control of the scene and determined the back-pack was not a threat.

The Civic Center houses several city offices. Employees were evacuated and bystanders were asked to leave the parking lot.

During the incident, all services at the Dothan Civic Center were suspended until the matter was resolved. Normal business operations resumed at 1 p.m.

Montgomery, Ala. — A group of K-12 educators, administrators and support personnel are among the finalists for the 2013 Marbury Technology Innovation Award.

 

The award, sponsored by the Alabama State Department of Education, honors Chiquita Marbury's invaluable years of service as a technology innovator in Alabama by recognizing educators who are exemplary models of technology teachers and leaders.

 

Transforming learning one child at a time was Marbury’s daily pursuit. After 10 years, this passion is continued through the Marbury Technology Award program. Finalists who reflect the Marbury standard of excellence in six award categories are:

WSFA 12 News being removed from cable in Dothan, Abbeville

DOTHAN, AL (WSFA)- On or around May 30th, WSFA 12 News will be removed from the Comcast Cable system and the WOW Cable system (formerly Knology) in the Dothan area (Dothan and Abbeville).

This is being done because a new NBC Network affiliate will launch in Dothan, operated by a television group other than Raycom Media. The cable systems are, therefore, legally required to take this action.

You can still watch all of WSFA 12 News' programming over the air by using an outdoor VHF/UHF antenna.  For information about the best antenna to use click the link at the top of the page.

Additionally, you can watch WSFA 12 News' Today In Alabama (5-7am), First at Four (4-5pm) and The News at Nine (9-9:30pm) over WDFX Fox 34 in Dothan.

Efforts surrounding 'Prevention Week Alabama' include events and public education

Governor Robert Bentley recently proclaimed May 12-18 as Prevention Week in Alabama, coinciding with the National Prevention Week observance. Sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, NPW is dedicated to increasing awareness of, and action around, substance abuse and mental health issues. It serves to promote prevention efforts, provide education about behavioral health and strengthen community partnerships.

This year's theme, "Your voice. Your choice. Make a difference.," emphasizes that the prevention of substance abuse and promotion of mental health starts with the choices people make in their own lives.

Dr. Maranda Brown, director of the Office of Prevention Services in ADMH’s Division of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services, says, “The Office of Prevention Services is extremely excited to celebrate the 2nd annual NPW observance.

Fired hotel worker accused of destroying property

Fired hotel worker accused of destroying property

 

DOTHAN, AL - On May 8, 2013 the Dothan Police Department made a felony arrest after responding to a criminal mischief complaint at the Country Hearth Inn and Suites, located at 3011 Ross Clark Circle.

Investigators say Russell Martell was an employee of the hotel, who was recently fired. After being terminated, Martell was seen leaving a section of the hotel where witnesses found multiple pieces of property destroyed.

Martell was questioned about the incident and admitted to destroying the property. His arrest now brings this case to a close.

Martel, 50, of Connecticut was arrested and charged with first degree Criminal Mischief.

Martel’s bond has been set at $5,000.

Fort Rucker, AL - Retirees and their dependents enrolled to Lyster Army Health Clinic may be eligible for hearing aids at a substantially reduced cost through the Retiree-at-Cost Hearing Aid Program, also known as RACHAP.

The program provides retirees and their dependents over the age of 18 the opportunity to buy hearing aids at government cost, usually around $1,000. Generally, two hearing aids can run upward of $8,000 if purchased through an off-post seller.

“We are able to get the hearing aids for the government rate anywhere from $700-$1000, which saves the retirees a significant amount of money,” said Jamie Crook, licensed clinical chief Audiologist at Lyster.

Lyster is even able to offer options when picking out the right hearing aid, including state-of-the-art remote controls and Bluetooth accessories.
