Former casino lobbyist Jennifer Pouncy gets probation

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA)- Former lobbyist Jennifer Pouncy, the first person to plead guilty in the bingo corruption case, has been sentenced to probation by U.S. District Judge Keith Watkins.

The sentence includes 3 years probation, a $4,100 fine, and 100 hours of community service. The sentencing hearing took place this morning in Montgomery.

Pouncy's attorneys argued that since she cooperated in the early stages of the investigation, she deserved to be free on probation. Pouncy was facing a maximum of five years in prison.

Jennifer Pouncy was an employee of former lobbyist Jarrod Massey who is now serving a prison term for his role in a conspiracy to buy votes for pro-gambling legislation.

Pouncy cooperated with the FBI and investigators starting in late spring 2010 and she testified at both federal trials that she had offered bribes to legislators to support pro-gambling legislation.

Pouncy admitted offering $2 million in campaign help to one senator and $100,000 to another for their support of pro-gambling legislation. She testified against the senators, but they were acquitted at trial.

Prosecutors had recommended two years in prison, but the judge said there was no benefit to society by sending her to prison.

Federal prosecutors also filed papers this week, opposing a third delay in reporting to prison for Ronnie Gilley. He has asked for more time to recover from surgery. Prosecutors argue that the federal prison system can provide Gilley with the post-operative care he might require.
