Three arrested following investigation into stolen firearms

On January 24, 2013 the Dothan Police Department Criminal Investigation Division conducted a search warrant at a residence located in the 400 block of East Spring Street as a part of an ongoing investigation involving the illegal possession and sale of firearms. During the search warrant, police seized multiple weapons, most of which were confirmed to be stolen during residential burglaries reported in the Wiregrass area. Police say two suspects were arrested in connection with this case and a third is wanted. Police are asking anyone with information about the case or location of Harry Wright to call the Dothan Police Department or CrimeStoppers 334-793-7000.

Dothan man linked with 2012 arson

On January 24, 2013 the Dothan Police Department made a felony arrest following a lengthy investigation of a 2012 arson. Investigators say Braden Willis was arrested for starting a fire which destroyed a single wide mobile home located in the 600 block of Oakland Drive. Police say the investigation of the May 20, 2012 fire was a joint effort between the Dothan Fire and Dothan Police Departments and will now be closed following yesterday’s arrest.

  • Braden Lee WIllis, white male, 26 years of age, of South Ussery Street was arrested and charged with Second Degree Arson with a $30,000 bond. All persons arrested are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Dothan PD searching for robbery suspect

On January 24, 2013 the Dothan Police Department responded 1486 West Main Street in reference to an armed robbery at 7:51 p.m. Upon arrival, the clerk told police she was taking the garbage out to the dumpster, when a black male wearing all black with a bandana covering his face came out of the bushes near the dumpster. The suspect was armed with a handgun and told her to go back into the store. The clerk complied and said once inside the store the suspect demanded she place cash into a plastic bag. The suspect then fled from the business and was last seen running towards Pariton Avenue. 

Police are asking anyone with information about the case or identity of the suspect to call the Dothan Police Department or CrimeStoppers 334-793-7000.

Real-life mom from 'The Blind Side' to speak at Dothan Education Foundation fundraiser

The Dothan Education Foundation is pleased to announce that Leigh Anne Tuohy, the real-life Memphis mom of the New York Times best-selling book and hit movie, "The Blind Side", will be the keynote speaker for their March 7th fundraising event.  Many are aware of Tuohy's story as the adoptive mom of Baltimore Raven's Michael Oher, but how the path was paved was not completely told on screen.  On March 7th, in Dothan, Alabama, she will tell her personal story of giving back, finding value in others, and the power of making a difference with what you have.

Area School Superintendents are Wallace College Alumni

Becky Birdsong, Donny Bynum, Dennis Coe, Lesa Knowles, Tim Pitchford, and Tim Wilder have several things in common. They are all current or former area school superintendents and are alumni of Wallace Community College.

Some members of this elite group have been in their positions for several years, but two are new to their responsibilities. Lesa Knowles, superintendent of Henry County Schools, and Becky Birdsong, Geneva County Schools, assumed their positions within the past year (Knowles served as interim beginning in December 2011).

Three wiregrass residents sentenced for carjacking and kidnapping of three young children

Montgomery, Alabama – Joshua Roland Fuller Gilley, 26, of Enterprise, Alabama, and Westly Robert Rogers, 25, of Ozark, Alabama, and Melissa Lynn Mione McGee, 37, of Daleville, Alabama have all been sentenced after pleading guilty to carjacking an Isuzu Rodeo in which three children, ages, 2 ½ years, 1 ½ years, and 2 months old were riding in the backseat; and to kidnapping those same three young children, announced U.S. Attorney, George L. Beck, Jr.. 

Gilley was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Mark Fuller to 46 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to carjacking.  Rogers was sentence by Judge Fuller to 32 months imprisonment after pleading to carjacking and McGee was sentence by the same judge to 210 months imprisonment after pleading guilty to kidnapping.
