Huntingdon men lost to 16th-ranked St. Mary's

The Huntingdon men’s basketball team opened 2013 with nationally ranked St. Mary’s College in the Morris Cregger Invitational at Roanoke College.

The Hawks remained within 10 points for most of the first half and only trailed by nine points with 16 minutes to play before 16th-ranked St. Mary’s pulled away for a 99-69 win on Tuesday.

“St. Mary’s is a very good team,” Huntingdon head coach Mike Pugh said. “We didn’t play well inside and we had too many turnovers. You can’t make mistakes against a team of that caliber.”

Jeremiah Thomas and Austin Hill each had 12 points and four rebounds for Huntingdon (3-9). Thomas also had three blocked shots.

Nick LaGuerre led St. Mary’s (11-1) with 36 points, seven assists and five steals.

Huntingdon returns to action in the consolation game of the tournament on Wednesday.

Alabama State Parks offer discounted lodging for hunters

Alabama State Parks offer discounted lodging for hunters

Outdoor Alabama has announced that some Alabama State Parks are offering special lodging packages for hunters now through February 2013.

“Hunters are an important part of Alabama’s natural heritage,” said Alabama State Parks Director Greg Lein. “The funding generated by hunting license sales is combined with federal matching dollars, which helps support public lands such as WMAs. Without Alabama’s hunters, access to public recreational land could be more limited. We appreciate all of what our hunters do for wildlife and land conservation.”

Huntingdon's Manuel earns second MPV honor

Huntingdon's Manuel earns second MPV honor

Huntingdon running back Trevor Manuel got a surprise as he walked off the field last Saturday after the FCS Senior Scout Bowl.

Shortly after being named MVP and scoring the winning touchdown in the South All-Stars’ 20-17 overtime win against the North, Manuel was approached by a young fan.

“I was coming off the field and this little kid asked me if he could have my gloves,” Manuel said. “Of all the players out there, he chose to ask me. The smile on his face when I gave him the gloves really made my day. That’s something I’ll remember.”

The All-Star game was the second in eight days for Manuel and Huntingdon defensive tackle D.J. Chappell. It was also Manuel’s second MVP honor. Manuel was named MVP of the D3 Senior Classic on Dec. 7.

Last week was a rewarding week for Huntingdon senior D.J. Chappell.

The defensive tackle began the week by becoming the first Huntingdon football player to earn first-team All-America honors from the American Football Coaches Association. On Friday night, he was named first-team All-American by D3football.com.

“Anytime you receive recognition like this, it’s a great accomplishment,” Chappell said. “It feels good when your hard work is recognized. But like I’ve said before, it’s also a recognition of my teammates and the kind of players I’ve been fortunate to play with.”

Chappell, a two-time first-team All-South Region selection, was named honorable mention All-American by D3football.com in 2011.

RTJ Golf Trail offers $20 golf on the 20th in 2012!

RTJ Golf Trail offers $20 golf on the 20th in 2012!

What started as a concept to enhance the image of a state has turned out to be one of the most successful achievements in the golf industry.

In 1992 the first golf courses opened on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama. The vision of creating a golf trail came from Dr. David G. Bronner, the CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama. The golf course designs started with Robert Trent Jones after coming out of retirement and have continued with Roger Rulewich, Jones’ protégé. The original courses opened in 1992 and additional courses have been added over the years. In 2011, greens were replaced on several courses. Silver Lakes underwent a significant renovation after tornado damage in 2011.

Now that all 26 courses on 11 different sites are up and running, you are the one who gets to celebrate.
