Huntingdon men pick up second win of the season

The Huntingdon men’s basketball team took control in the first half Wednesday and knocked off Millsaps 75-61. The win was the second of the season for the Hawks (2-6).

“We played great defense, we rebounded well and we shot free throws well. When you do those three things, wins are a lot easier to come by,” Huntingdon head coach Mike Pugh said. “Those are three areas we’ve struggled in this season but we’ve been working hard to improve and it showed tonight.”

Huntingdon built a double-digit lead in the first half and led by as many as 14 points before taking a 40-35 lead at the half. The Hawks opened the second half with a 6-0 run to push their lead back to 11 points. Huntingdon built as much as a 20-point lead in the second half and led by at least 14 points for the final 12 minutes of the game.

AUM hosts honor roll breakfast to celebrate academic success

Last Friday, the Auburn Montgomery athletic department hosted an Honor Roll Breakfast to reward all student-athletes who received a 3.0 grade-point average or higher during the spring 2012 semester. Over half of the athletes at AUM qualified, including 51 who made the Provost’s Honor Roll for having a GPA of 3.50 or higher.

Representatives from all 11 athletic programs were present at the event.

“This truly is one of the best parts of my job,” Athletic Director Steve Crotz said. “It helps us validate an important mission that we have as an institution, and certainly as an athletic department, in ensuring the academic success of our student-athletes. This is a great way for us to help communicate their academic achievements to the rest of the campus community.”

Fifty-one student-athletes earned a spot on the Provost’s Honor Roll for having a grade-point average between 3.50-4.0.

Huntingdon senior defensive tackle D.J. Chappell added to his list of accomplishments on Tuesday.

With the release of the American Football Coaches Association’s Division III All-America team, Chappell is the first Huntingdon football player to earn first-team All-America.

“It is a great honor to be recognized,” Chappell said. “I’ve worked hard to be the best player I can be and I thank God for allowing me to stay healthy and for the opportunities He has given me.

“Even though this is an individual award, to me, it’s also a recognition of the guys I had playing around me. I was blessed to have great teammates and we made each other better. I couldn’t have done the things I did without the guys I had around me.”

Chappell was recently named first-team All-South Region by D3football.com for a second straight year and was named honorable mention All-American by D3football.com as a junior.

Huntingdon's Manuel named MPV of D3 Senior Classic

Huntingdon running back Trevor Manuel had high expectations for himself in Friday night’s D3 Senior Classic.

Sharing time in a backfield that included the leading scorer and the second leading scorer in Division III this season, Manuel quickly became the star of the game. Manuel rushed for twice as many yards as any other back in the game and scored three touchdowns, including the first two touchdowns for the South team, in a 37-21 win over the North.

Manuel was named MVP of the game for his performance.

“It’s a good feeling to be able to play like that against the top players in Division III,” Manuel said. “All of the backs in the game were good and had things they did well. I just tried to take advantage of my opportunity when it came along.”

Manuel rushed for a game-high 54 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries. He also had one reception for 24 yards.
